Rick's 450 Gal. Bow Front Aquarium
This is my new, completely custom 450 gallon (approximately) acrylic bow front
tank made for me by Midwest Custom Aquariums. The tank itself is about 32” high
by about 90” wide. It is 30” deep at the sides and from there, bows out an
additional 10” to 40” at the center. Some of my fish were getting too big for
even my 265 gallon and since I
was re-modeling my downstairs and had to
move/breakdown the old tank anyway, I decided it was time to go bigger and
better. It was a great opportunity to put everything I have learned along the
way and all my personal preferences into one perfect aquarium. Chris over at
Midwest did a beautiful job with the build and all my design preferences.
The workmanship is meticulous and the attention to detail is superb. He also
built the stand and canopy as well, which is basically a wooden skin over a
welded tubular steel frame. I went with a black (painted) background this time
since it basically “hides” the overflow and return plumbing fittings. One of
the main goals with the tank was to make serviceability easy should anything
need to be serviced/replaced/repaired, etc. More importantly, however, was
that routine maintenance be as easy and as minimal as possible. All coral
decorations are from Signature Coral and were custom ordered for their colors.
Most of them were placed at the very back of the tank to give lots of
unobstructed swimming room for the
big fish. Working on it when I could, it took about 4 months from the initial
transfer from the old tank to the final installation of the cooling fan to get
it to the point that it’s at now. Everything continues to work beautifully and
as planned and I couldn’t be
happier. There is no longer anything on the “To Do” list for this tank. The
fish are definitely more active in their new home and seem hungrier than
ever…although I am a bit poorer!
